Could Google translate Shakespeare? - Prof Duncan Large - Tuesday 5th December 2017
Could Google translate Shakespeare? - Prof Duncan Large - Tuesday 5th December 2017, 6.30pm, Julian Study Centre Lecture Theatre, UEA
Join BCLT's Prof Duncan Large for his inaugural lecture, as he asks the question, 'Could Google Translate Shakespeare?'. Translation technology has made very rapid advances in recent years, and we now expect our devices to provide us with serviceable translations of many kinds of text, at the touch of a screen. Literary texts are still viewed as an exception to this trend, but is it only a matter of time before we can expect Google to come up with a decent translation of Shakespeare? This lecture celebrates all that is human about literary translation.
