Aims

The aim is to increase the number of translations of Spanish books in foreign markets. New Spanish Books has two annual editions that come out days before the London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair. Books from all genres are submitted by Spanish editors and literary agents, and they all feature on the website, visited by publishers, agents, translators, and booksellers around the world. Since its beginning in 2007 new Spanish Books has raised awareness on hundreds of books, and helped Spanish publishers and agents promote and sale their titles. The Spanish Embassy Economic & Commercial Office in London coordinates the "UK Panel's Choice" section of the website - a selection of books that local experts recommend as the most interesting for translating and publishing in the British market.

How it works

The panel meets twice at their offices in central London. At the first panel meeting a number of books are longlisted for which the Economic & Commercial Offices then commissions readers reports to independent professional readers. Once they the readers reports are finished, the panel meets for the second time to arrive at a final shortlist to be highlighted in the "UK Panel's Choice" section of the website.
The panel takes decisions with total independence; the Economic & Commercial Office personnel only attend meetings as facilitators.

About the panel

Panels are usually formed by six people: publishers, translators, critics, booksellers, and a permanent representative from the British Centre for Literary Translation Panellists change every edition, and former members include Margaret Jull Costa, Christopher McLehose, Bill Swainson, Martin Schiffino, Daniela de Grote, and Nick Caistor.

Future plans

Recently, the Economic & Commercial Offices in Paris and Dusseldorf have joined New Spanish Books, co-ordinating their own panels for their markets. Other markets are to follow.
