Generating academic debate

BCLT encourages and generates academic debate about the theory and practice of literary translation and its teaching.

The Centre is an integral part of the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing which is dedicated to the study and practice of writing in all of its many forms, to the recovery of the history of writing and to exploring the interface between the critical and the creative.

The School believes firmly that literary translation is an important aspect of creative writing, and its teaching underscores this relationship in many ways.

Faculty affiliated with BCLT teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including the well-established MA in Literary Translation, which has strong international recruitment, and the supervision of PhD students.

The MA programme offers a regular series of translation workshops which are free and open to everyone.

PhD students within the School are currently working on the intersection of translation with such issues of gender, poetic voice and rhythm, philosophy and postcolonialism. BCLT is happy to support this research in various ways including through our new PhD Affiliates scheme.

BCLT Director Valerie Henitiuk researches primarily in the areas of gender, east-west cultural contact, and world literature, with special interests in French and Japanese. BCLT is also actively involved in literary translation teaching and research both in the UK and internationally. We offer workshops and design curricula to help train translators and facilitate intellectual exchange.
