Institute for World Literature
Istanbul, 25 June - 20 July 2012
Sponsored places available through BCLT
The British Centre for Literary Translation, on behalf of the Consortium for Humanities and the Arts – South-East England (CHASE), is pleased to announce two sponsored places at the innovative, Harvard-led Institute for World Literature, to be held in Turkey in summer 2012.
The Institute for World Literature (IWL) was created to explore the study of literature in a globalizing world. As we enter the twenty-first century, our understanding of “world literature” has expanded beyond the classic canon of European masterpieces and entered a far-reaching inquiry into the variety of the world’s literary cultures and their distinctive reflections and refractions of the political, economic, and religious forces sweeping the globe. Seminars for 2012 include Pascale Casanova on “What Is a World Writer?”; David Damrosch on “Grounds for Comparison”; and Ronit Ricci on “Translation and Culture.” Guest lectures will be given by Orhan Pamuk and others.
Postgraduate students, postdocs, or faculty members at Essex, Goldsmith’s, Kent, Sussex or UEA who are interested in attending IWL 2012 should email Valerie Henitiuk, BCLT Director (v.henitiuk@uea.ac.uk) no later than 2 March, including a copy of their c.v. and a 300-word statement describing current scholarly interests and plans, as well as specific suggestions of how the IWL might further those interests and plans. For postgraduate students, the statement should also include information about any relevant courses taken and/or taught in comparative and world literature and theory. BCLT will assess the applications and select those most likely to benefit from the experience.
The successful applicants will be responsible for their own travel, room and board, and incidental costs. They are also responsible for paying the tuition fee (at a discounted rate of US$900, or roughly £575) and then claiming reimbursement of the tuition fee through BCLT by submitting the IWL receipt.

BCLT and NSTS collaborate for Bursary

We are pleased to announce a joint initiative with and the Nida School of Translation Studies (NSTS) in the form of a collaborative bursary for NSTS 2012. The bursary is available to qualified applicants at the advanced PhD candidate, post-doctoral or faculty level who can show a demonstrable financial need. The bursary aims to support emerging literary translation researchers within the UK who would benefit from attending this intensive, international research symposium.
NSTS operates under the auspices of the San Pellegrino University Foundation in Misano Adriatico, Italy. Now in its sixth year, NSTS convenes for two weeks each May, bringing together scholars from around the world, including many of the top names in Translation Studies. In 2012, the Nida Professors will be Anthony Pym (Tarragona) and Musa Dube (Botswana).
