How to apply for the BCLT Summer School

Applications are now closed for the 2026 Summer School

Applications for the 2027 IN-PERSON BCLT Summer School will open in January 2027. Workshop strands will be announced in December 2026.

To apply for the Summer School you will be asked to do the following:

1) Complete a Summer School application form

2) Complete a separate personal details form.

The application form will ask you:

  • why you are applying for the Summer School at this moment in time.

  • what your literary translation experience is so far to date.

  • what you hope to gain from attending this year's Summer School.

  • to include a sample translation (no longer than 400 words) from your chosen language into English. This sample should reflect the workshop strand you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a prose workshop, it should be a prose piece, or if you are applying for poetry, it should be a poem/s.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel, however selection criteria can vary based on the workshop strand and how many applications we receive. It is always worth submitting an application. Make sure your application shows your commitment to literary translation and why you are applying for this training opportunity at this moment in time. Explain how you will contribute to the workshop group. We accept applications, and offer places, to translators at a variety of stages in their journey. This is an opportunity for translators that are just starting out and also a great opportunity for literary translators that are already published. Emerging translators learn a lot from more experienced literary translators, but we also know that mid-career translators can gain insight from those that are just beginning their careers.
