Interested in studying for a PhD or MA in Literary Translation?

The MA in Literary Translation at the British Centre for Literary Translation (BCLT) is the longest-running programme in the UK dedicated exclusively to literary translation. It has helped launch the careers of many leading translators, including Don Bartlett, Christina McSweeney and Rosalind Harvey. Combining creative practice with critical study, the course explores the translation of prose, poetry, theatre and experimental writing. Based at BCLT in Norwich, England’s first UNESCO City of Literature, you’ll learn from renowned translators, take part in dynamic workshops, and build connections with writers, publishers and the wider literary translation community.

BCLT colleagues have supervised a wide range of PhD topics in literary translation and translation studies in recent years. Dissertations may take the form of a traditional discursive analysis, but UEA has also pioneered a creative-critical model, with a substantial new translation accompanied by a critical treatment. We will work with you to develop your topic and to give you the best chance of securing funding. Current PhD students are working across a wide range of languages: you can find out their topics from the BCLT Research Group pages. PhD students have gone on to careers in academia and as translators.
