Korean-to-English literary translators are invited to participate in an intensive, three-day online workshop focused on pitching, facilitated by translator Sung Ryu and editor Hannah Chukwu. This is an exciting opportunity for translators to sharpen their pitches for a book-length project, receiving feedback from fellow seasoned translators, the editor in residence, a literary agent, and other publishing professionals. On the final day of the workshop, participants will have a chance to pitch their projects to a group of editors.
This workshop is geared towards more experienced translators who have begun publishing but are unsure how to navigate unagented submissions. Translators are encouraged to apply with passion projects that have fallen through the cracks of commercial publishing, projects that take risks and look beyond trends, and projects that deserve a home with the right support and network.
The programme also includes plenary sessions focused on the industry and an opportunity to speak to publishers of translated literature in a small group setting.

Workshop Leader
Sung Ryu is a literary translator working from and into Korean. Her translations include Shoko’s Smile by Choi Eunyoung, Teddy Bears Never Die by Cho Yeeun, I’m Waiting for You: And Other Stories by Kim Bo-Young (co-translated with Sophie Bowman) and Future Past Tense by Bae Myung-hoon (co-translated with Stella Kim, forthcoming). She has called many places home, including South Korea, the United States, Canada, and now Singapore.

Editor
Hannah Chukwu is a multi-award-winning Publishing Director at John Murray Group, Hachette UK, where she leads a literary team publishing across fiction and non-fiction, with a focus on publishing underrepresented voices. Authors she publishes include bell hooks, Bora Chung and Yoko Tawada. Prior to joining Hachette, she commissioned at Hamish Hamilton, PRH, where she also edited Five Dials magazine, founded the Black Britain: Writing Back series with Bernardine Evaristo, and was the Policy and Campaign Consultant for the curriculum change project Lit in Colour, in collaboration with the Runnymede Trust. She is a board member for English PEN and The Brilliant Club, and an Advisory Committee member for the Booker Prize Foundation

The BCLT Advanced Translation Workshops are a rare professional development opportunity for published literary translators. Since 2021, BCLT has been running 3-day online advanced translation workshops for more experienced literary translators. These workshops bring together translators from around the world working with the same language combinations and offer them the chance to workshop alongside an experienced literary translator, as well as a professional editor. Since 2021 we have run advanced translation workshops for Catalan-English (Institut Ramon Llull), German-English (Goethe Institut and New Books in German), Scandinavian literary translators (Danish Arts Foundation, NORLA and the Swedish Arts Council), translators of literature from Taiwan (National Museum of Taiwan Literature) and Italian-English translators (Italian Cultural Institute)..
After translating my first novel I was feeling enthusiastic but also at a bit of a loss as to what steps to take next. The BCLT Translation workshop seemed an accessible way to build on my enthusiasm, further develop my craft, and connect with other translators, including a workshop leader whose work I admired
