Translating Style with Jean Boase-Beier

In order to be able to translate a literary text well, it is crucial to understand its style. Without due attention to style the resulting translation might be linguistically correct, but there will be something missing. In this workshop we will discuss what literary style is, and look at examples in various languages.   

Jean Boase-Beier is Professor Emerita of Literature and Translation at the University of East Anglia, where she founded the MA in Literary Translation. Her work focusses on translation and style, and on the translation of Holocaust poetry. She was Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded project ‘Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust’, which resulted in Translating the Poetry of the Holocaust: Translation, Style and the Reader (2015, Bloomsbury). Other recent publications in the translation of style include chapters for the 2021 book Narrative Retellings: Stylistic Approaches, edited by Marina Lambrou, and the 2022 Routledge Handbook of Translation and Memory, edited by Sharon Deane-Cox and Anneleen Spiessens, as well as the book Translation and Style (2020, Routledge).  Jean is also a translator of poetry, and has published translations of Ernst Meister, Paul Celan and nelly Sachs, among others. She is Translations Editor for Arc Publications.
