BCLT Research Seminar: Translation Lessons -Visibility and a Language Education with Regina Galasso

Online

Wednesday 2 December | 4—5.30pm (GMT)

This presentation considers translation in a moment shaped by ethical questions surrounding artificial intelligence, calls for greater linguistic inclusivity, and the urgent need to preserve and sustain languages. It argues that these challenges present an opportunity to make translation more visible and recognize its essential role in our intellectual and civic lives. The presentation explores how acts of translation offer all of us a language education by deepening our understanding of how languages work, how they shape our experiences of the world, and how they connect us to others.

Regina Galasso is Professor in the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Program and Director of the Edwin C. Gentzler Translation Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is also Executive Director of Metamorphoses: A Journal of Translation Arts. Her award-winning scholarship highlights the role of translation in literary histories and contemporary culture.
